Shopping for your next vehicle is one of the most grueling things we have to do. The main things that people look for when considering their next vehicle are size and obviously, looks. Now of course, there are those who will pick their next vehicle based on its awful eccentric design just so they can say that they’re driving “the ugliest car on the road.” Most of us however, pick a vehicle because we want to drive something cute, sporty, or classy.
Whether you want the funky-looking car or the car that goes best with your handbag, there’s much more to look into than the vehicle’s design. Consider these steps before you settle on your next vehicle:
1. Safety First!
Once you’ve narrowed your search to a few vehicles, check out the vehicle’s safety ratings! Even if you have a perfect driving record, you can only control what you do on the road. Check and see how many airbags the vehicle comes equipped with, if there are any safety recalls, if the vehicle comes with a spare tire.
A lot of vehicles these days also come with several different safety features – back-up camera, Bluetooth, adaptive cruise control, etc. Find out which of these are important to you and check to see what your desired car comes equipped with.
2. Make sure you’re going after what you can afford!
If you are already have a car payment, it’s a little easier to determine what you can or cannot afford – whether you need to find something to lower your payments, or if you have a little bit more room in your budget to upgrade to something a little bit more luxurious than what you currently have. If you’re a first-time buyer, this can be a little bit more difficult. After you determine how much of a payment you can handle…
– Get Pre-Approved! You can either fill out an online credit application or go to your bank to get an idea of how much you will be allowed to finance.
– See what kind of incentives and rebates are available. Ask the dealer if they have any additional discounts or private offers to bring down the price of the vehicle as much as possible.
– Decide whether you want to lease or purchase. Sometimes you can lease a vehicle with a lower payment than a purchase, which is definitely a smart way to go especially if you’re not planning on keeping the vehicle very long anyway.
3. Determine how much your trade is worth!
If you’re looking to replace your current vehicle, there are several online sources that can help you determine how much you will be able to get out of your trade. Try websites like AutoTrader.com or BlackBook to get a good idea of what you’ll get from a dealer.
You always have the option of selling your vehicle privately and using that cash for a down payment but sometimes there is more hassle in that than it’s worth.
4. Test Drive!
A car will be one of the biggest purchases most will make in their life, so you have to make sure that you know what you’re paying for and that you’re comfortable in it! A vehicle can be perfect on paper but if it’s too low to the ground, or you can see over the steering wheel, it’s obviously not the right vehicle for you.
