Wilmington, NC- The 61st running of the Daytona 500 is quickly approaching just days away! One of the most sought out sporting events of all time, the Daytona 500 will be held on February 17th.
In a unique start this year’s Daytona 500 will feature the 2019 Silverado 1500 as the official pace vehicle. This is the first time a pick-up truck will serve as the pace car in the Daytona 500, with two-time Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the driver’s seat.
Honored to pace the Daytona 500 in the Silverado 1500, Earnhardt Jr. said (as cited by Motor Authority, 2018) “Away from the track I’ve driven Chevy trucks all my life, and I’m excited to have this unique experience of pacing the Daytona 500 with the Silverado.” Earnhardt Jr. is a member of the Hendrick Motorsports family, and retired from racing in 2017. Earnhardt Jr. is now a race analyst for the NBCUniversal, and owner of JR Motorsports.
Under the Hood– Although the Silverado 1500 lacks the appearance of a traditional race car, under the hood it features a 6.2-litre V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, packing a punch close in line with the Chevy Camaro.
Our very own Jeff Gordon will be commentating the Daytona 500 on Fox Sports. Gordon has won three Daytona 500’s 1997, 1999 and 2005. In 2015 Gordon’s final year of racing he won the pole at the Daytona 500, then in 2017 Gordon was the honorary pace car driver for the Daytona 500.
Although this is the first time for a pick-up truck to pace the Daytona 500, Chevrolet has been in the spotlight before pacing the “Great American Race” a total of 12 times; 5 of those times were with a Corvette, and 7 with a Camaro.

Wilmington, NC- NASCAR Hall of Fame Day is quickly approaching as we prepare for another exciting career achievement of our one and only Jeff Gordon. Gordon will be leading the pack in the 10th class of inductees into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on February 1st in Charlotte, NC. By racking up 96 percent of the possible votes Gordon has earned another stat as the highest vote-getter in NASCAR Hall of Fame history.
This celebratory weekend will be full of events and opportunities for fans to get close with the Hall of Famers. See the full list of events.
Gordon took NASCAR by storm in the 1990s being the youngest driver to win a premier series title in the modern era as a 24-year-old in 1995, going on to win three more championships (1997, ‘98, and 2001). His team was dubbed the Rainbow Warriors for their iconic colorful No. 24 Chevrolet that took a modern era-record of 13 wins in 1996. This record shattering team ranks third on the all-time wins list, and launched Gordon into a winning powerhouse with a total of 93 races, three Daytona 500s, four straight Southern 500s, and a record of five Brickyard 400s. Gordon also won 4 NASCAR Cup Series Championships 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001. With a record of 797 consecutive starts Gordon retired from full-time racing as the premier series “Iron Man”.
Aside from all of Gordon’s on track success he has continued to be a great face for the sport and for the causes he believes in with his Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation, an organization with efforts to support pediatric cancer research, treatment, and patient support.
Gordon currently delivers that same passion he shared on the track with NASCAR fans as an analyst for FOX Sports.

To showcase the Silverado during Summer of Chevy, we chose to go a different route in our filming. Earlier this year, Jeff Gordon Chevrolet met Bill O’Brien and a few other board members of Veteran Owned Veteran Grown, a local non-profit that aids veterans by giving a renewed sense of purpose and potential entrepreneurship through agricultural endeavors. The ultimate goal is to help veterans live a full, sustainable life and build a stronger community together.
“VOVG exists for several reasons. The biggest one is to connect veterans and their families socially so they don’t feel like they are alone in this journey. We focus strongly on agriculture in its many forms to help veterans become sustainable,” according to the Veteran Owned Veteran Grown website. “Farming is hard work with long hours but, it also provides a peace and serenity that no pill the VA will give you can. Everything from raising chickens to craft work. We will do whatever we can to make you sustainable.”
Please enjoy the short feature that we produced on site at Veteran Owned Veteran Grown, starring some of their members with a little help from Team RWB Wilmington.
