To start your trip it’s only right to visit the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. First stop is the Oak Island Lighthouse built-in 1952 replacing the Cape Fear Lighthouse. Made out of concrete long and skinny tower had the brightest light in the United States from 1958-1962, standing on Bald Head Island since 1817. Old Baldy has rightfully earned its right to be the first stop.
2. Cape Lookout Lighthouse
The next lighthouse on our list is on the beautiful Crystal Coast we have Cape Lookout. This lighthouse is on the Outer Banks in the southernmost part and it’s painted for directions with black facing north and south and white east and west. If you’re lucky you might even spot some wild horses!
3. Ocracoke Lighthouse
As simple and remote as the Ocracoke Lighthouse may seem it had been guiding sailors and boats since 1823. The lighthouse stands 75 feet tall, diameter narrows from 25feet at the base to 12 feet at its peak. Being one of the most remote stretches of the Outer Banks, this could be a full-day experience from seeing Ocracoke Lighthouse to exploring the island.
4. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Can’t miss the tallest brick lighthouse in the US and we are lucky to have it right on the North Carolina coast on Hatteras Island. Originally built in 1803 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built as a ‘guiding light’ to help sailors navigate through the graveyard of the Atlantic. There are 269 steps from the group level to the lens of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Always impressive to see the brick lighthouse standing at 210 ft.
5. Bodie Island Lighthouse
The Bodie Island Lighthouse has been replicated three times since 1872, standing 156 feet tall. It is located on the Roanoke Sound, it is located amongst the marshland. The view from the top is incredible and totally worth it.
6. Currituck Beach Lighthouse
Currituck stands out being the only natural-brick lighthouse on the coast with 1 million bricks. Towering over the northern Outer Banks historic Corolla Village making for a beautiful sight at the top with expansive views of the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Currituck is the largest of seven Fresnel lens sizes being known as a first-order lighthouse.
7. Roanoke Lighthouse
We are at our last stop of the trip often one of the most overlooked Outer Banks lighthouses we have Roanoke LIghthouse. Don’t be discouraged by it being tucked away in the quiet east end of Manteo waterfront with small stature and limited visibility, it’s still a lovely sight to see. It jets out 40 yards into the Roanoke Sound with a prim white exterior with black shutters and red shingled roof, capped off by a 2′ ft., 4″ in. the tall lens gives this lighthouse a classic coastal look. Enjoy the fantastic waterfront view and stroll the wooden boardwalk to explore the exterior.
We have completed our North Carolina Lighthouse tour! We hope you had fun and enjoyed our roomy Equinox, be sure to stop back again for another road trip!
At Jeff Gordon Chevrolet we have already kicked off our summer with Summer of Chevy, but technically speaking summer does not officially begin until Jun 21st also being the summer solstice and the longest day of the year for anyone who lives north of the equator.
Now you may be asking yourself what is the summer solstice and why is it the longest day of the year?
The summer solstice occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer, or 23.5 degrees north latitude, meaning it will occur exactly at 11:54 am ET on Friday the 21st. Due to the Earth orbiting around the sun on a tilted axis, the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere gets more exposure to direct sunlight over the course of a day between March and September. Then the rest of the year the Southern Hemisphere gets more causing the season changes. Fun fact; longest day to ever happen in Earth’s history dated back to 1912.
Not only is the longest day well the longest day of the year but it is also when thousands of participants all across the world come together to fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s. Participants choose an activity that they desire to participate in to raise funds and awareness for the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Enjoy the extra long day cruising around town with the wind blowing through your hair because the Chevrolet Equinox has a panoramic power sunroof giving everyone in the vehicle a wide-open view. Road trips don’t need to boring ever again because you have the panoramic roof which is great to search for constellations or cloud spotting. Working on the road, or need to entertain the kids? The Equinox offers available built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi, as well as The Equinox, offers 39.7 inches of rearseat leg room with enough room for 5 passengers. One of the worst things about summer is crawling into a vehicle with hot seats but in the Equinox you never have to worry about that again because there are ventilated seats.
A summer classic is going to the drive-in movie theater with a vehicle packed full of your friends or a romantic date night. Unfortunately, though there aren’t many drive-in-movie theaters around anymore.
There are still alternatives though! Around Wilmington, there are movie nights where you can go to a park and watch movies for free sitting in the grass. You could always host your own movie night in your backyard just be sure to invite the neighbors so they don’t get upset. Or if you’re looking for a more romantic night, crawl into your vehicle and set up your movie.
Here are some places around Wilmington where you can watch movies in the park:
When: All summer long every Sunday film begins at dusk
What to bring: Family, friends, blanket, lawn chairs, and picnic
What not to bring: No alcohol or glass allowed.
DIY Backyard Movie Theater
It may not be a drive-in-movie but it’s still a lot of fun for a nice summer night with friends and family, here is everything that you’ll need to make your own outdoor movie theater right in your backyard!
There are 4 key components that you will need when setting up your backyard theater;
Video Source: Some options for this would be your laptop, DVD player, Blu-Ray player, or gaming console.
Video Projector: What your projector will need:
Brightness – go for 2000 lumens or better
Resolution – look for a 720p or 1080p model HD is also a great thing to look for.
Sound- Don’t worry about if the projector has a built-in speaker, they do not help for outdoor settings.
Sound System: Think about something that you have that produced enough sound and can be plugged into your video source. Some ideas are:
A good set of computer speakers
Take it old school with a boom box – as long as it has auxiliary outputs
Home Theater in a box
A Screen: Really any white material will work, but here are a few ideas to make your screen.
What you will need:
Two white king sized flat/top sheets.
40 feet of 1 1/2 inch SCH 40 PVC Pipe
(2) 1/4 inch x 3-inch eye bolts
(2) 90° PVC elbows
(3) 1 1/2 inch PVC “T” pipes
(3) five-gallon buckets
Cord or Rope
How to make the screen:
Cut 2 pieces 100” X 56”
Turn right side out with the seams on the inside, ironing down the seams will help it lay flat
Make pockets for the pipes by sewing the seam around all four sides about 4” away from the edge
Fold and iron the raw edges from the final side that has not been closed. Stitch the edges together to close the final side.
How to make the frame for the screen:
Lay your screen you just made flat on the ground. Take a 90° elbow and connect it to a ten-foot piece of 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe. Slide the pipe through the top pocket of the screen. Measure from the left to the right side of the screen and mark where you need to cut it. Take the pipe out, cut the pipe, and slide the pipe back through the screen. Place the second 90° elbow on the opposite end of the top pipe.
Place the “T” PVC connector into the bottom left-hand corner of the screen where it would belong. Measure from the top 90° elbow connector to the bottom tee connector to determine the length of the side pipe. Cut the pipe and slide into the side pocket of the screen and fit into the 90° elbow and then attach the “T” connector. Repeat for the right-hand side.
There should already be a hole in the screen for this, place the final tee connector in the center of the bottom pocket in the screen. Measure from the left tee to the center tee and cut to fit. Slide it in and attach to both tees. Repeat, by measuring from the center tee to the right tee, cutting and attaching.
In case of winds you will need to tie down your screen so attach one eye bolt to each side pipe.
Cut three 1 1/2 inch PVC pipes in lengths of 41 inches each. These will be the legs of the screen.
Stand the legs in the center of the 5-gallon buckets. Fill the buckets with sand to hold the legs in place.
Attach the “legs” to the 3 tee connectors on the bottom of the screen.
Now you have your screen, time to go pick out your movie and invite your friends over, don’t forget the popcorn!
If you do not have the time or simply do not want to build the screen there are other options, you could always do a projector screen although they are typically not that large, there are inflatable screens, as well as outdoor movie screens that you can buy. Another simple option if you have the space for it and location is to project the movie on the side of your house, garage door, tall fence. There are endless options for a movie screen, it’s all just a matter of how creative you want to get. Most importantly is to have fun, enjoy the movie, and eat popcorn!
Looking for something more romantic? Get in your vehicle with WiFi and have a movie night!

Julia Dalton Sits with Jeff Gordon Chevrolet As She Gets Ready to Compete for Miss USA
The beautiful Julia Dalton, Miss North Carolina USA sits down with Leacy Sauer of Jeff Gordon Chevrolet as she prepares to compete at the National Miss USA Competition in Baton Rouge, Louisiana this coming July. Watch the video here, or scroll down to read the transcript!
Since she was crowned in October of 2014 as Miss North Carolina, Julia has worked with Jeff Gordon Chevrolet to help fulfill her reign as Miss NC. As a native of Wilmington, NC, Julia came to Jeff Gordon Chevy looking for a vehicle sponsor. She felt that Chevrolet was a perfect choice, being truly American, whose lineup provided something for every lifestyle. She has driven several Chevy models, including the Trax, Impala, Equinox, Malibu, and more, to assist her safely in her many appearances around the state where she puts a strong focus on what she feels most strongly about – community outreach and charitable organizations.
Leacy: Hi! This is Leacy from Jeff Gordon Chevrolet. I am sitting here with Miss Julia Dalton who is Miss North Carolina. She is on her way to the Miss USA pageant this year and we just wanted to welcome you here and say thanks for having a chat with us today. And, actually, we just wanted to know – When were you actually crowned Miss North Carolina?
Julia: I was crowned Miss North Carolina USA on October 11th, 2014. It was a big night for me and it’s been an exciting year.
Leacy: Yeah, it sounds like it’s been really crazy. So, the pageant is coming up. When is it and where is it located this year?
Julia: Miss USA is going to be on July 12th and it’s in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. And it’s going to be hot and humid but thankfully since I’m from Wilmington, I’ll be used to it and my hair won’t get too crazy!
Leacy: Well, Baton Rouge, that will be a lot of fun, it’ll be quite a different experience probably. Very nice people who come from Louisiana, too.
Leacy: So, you’re a native of Wilmington. What are some of your favorite things about our Coastal City?
Julia: I love the mere fact that we have the beach and the waterways and that beautiful ecosystem. I’m a runner, and so I love taking my jog down to the beach. Getting that run is gives such a sense of solitude. It’s relaxing and [the beach] is so beautiful. There’s something very unique about our beaches, so I think that’s my favorite part.
Leacy: Great. So as Miss North Carolina , when will your reign end?
Julia: It’ll be a year from the night I got crowned so I’ll have to pass the torch again on October 12th, 2015.
Leacy: Well you’re here at the dealership today and so, [let’s] talk cars a little bit… Think back when you were learning how to drive… Everyone has interesting stories of when they were younger and a teenager and they had that one person who was trying to help them out and teach them the ropes. Who was that person for you?
Julia: I will never forget whenever we were young, we would do this thing where we would pull into our neighborhood, and my Dad would push back the seat of the car and would let one of us come and sit in his front lap and steer – we were really young, and it was just through the neighborhood and that was always really fun and something that I remember and so that I think that my Dad was always the one who instigated how to drive safely, how to hold the steering wheel and steer properly. So, I would say my Dad.
Leacy: Well that’s pretty cool.
Julia: Yeah, it’s a cute memory.
Leacy: So you’ve been with us now since a little bit after you started your reign last year. You got to drive a couple different Chevy models, taking you here and there and everywhere for your appearances. Which one really sticks out in your mind? Did you have a favorite?
Julia: That’s tough, because I really love all of them, but the 2 that stick out in my mind are the Impala, because it’s just the epitome of a luxury car. You feel comfortable, you feel safe, there’s [a lot of] space, it has a beautiful interior, and it drives really smooth – I love that one, for sure.
But I also really liked the Trax because you get the feel of a car like you’re in a sedan and you can whip around town, but like an SUV, you are sitting a little higher. That one’s super fun and really sporty – which reflects my personality.
Leacy: Wow, those are two very different vehicles.
Julia: Haha, I know! I have two completely different sides of my personality.
Leacy: So after Miss USA, what’s next?
Julia: After Miss USA, I’ll keep working at my job at PPD… If I don’t win. If I do win, I’ll be flown to New York City to start my media tour and I will live there for a year. But you know, if I don’t, I’ll come back to Wilmington, North Carolina and continue my job with PPD and fulfill my reign as Miss North Carolina.
Leacy: Awesome. Well, we all think you’re gonna win.
Julia: Thank you!
Leacy: Well, thanks so much for sitting with us today and guys, please be sure to watch the Miss USA Pageant coming up on July 12th, live on NBC at 7PM central!
Update 7/9: Julia has arrived in Baton Rouge and has gone through the Miss USA preliminary competition! Check out her contestant interview below!
