April 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day – a day where monuments and landmarks around the globe are lit up blue in support of the cause. Even though Jeff Gordon’s award-winning dealership in Wilmington is not (yet) considered a historic landmark, it will be joining the rest and lighting it up blue with its puzzle piece display, now up near South College Road! JGC Dealership 4-8-2019 Every night throughout the month of April, these pieces will be illuminated to show support for Autism Awareness and get the word out for the dealership’s annual fundraising campaign. If you’re local to the Chevy dealership and see the display, snap a pic (only if it’s safe!) and post it with the hashtag #JGCFamily so we can see it!

How To Get Pulled Over by the Cops

Well, this may seem like a pointless post since we did all have to take a driving test in order to obtain our licenses – we already know the rules of the road! Unfortunately, road rage is becoming more and more prominent these days and everyone probably needs a little reminder.

Here are the top 5 things that catch the attention of traffic police:

  1. Speeding
Well, duh. But why? The faster you go, the longer it takes for you to react to an unexpected situation. Braking distance also increases as your speed builds.
  2. Cell Phones
We all know that texting and driving is a big no-no. In North Carolina, it is legal to talk on your cell phone while driving, but using Bluetooth or some hands-free device will keep an officer’s eyes off of you.
  3. Hazardous Driving
This includes: blowing stop-signs and lights, improper lane changes, illegal U-turns, and driving at unsafe speeds. The cops are also going to notice when you’re busy shaving, putting on make-up, or changing your clothes. Of course, it’s not necessarily against the law to do these things, but you’re only drawing attention to yourself and a cop will likely pull you over as soon as you slip up.
  4. Equipment Violations
Leading the list are: heavily tinted windows, burnt-out headlights, broken windshields, expired tags, etc.
  5. Cruising on the Highway
Cruising in the left lane on a multi-lane highway instead of using it only to pass slower traffic on the right will grab an officer’s attention. The same goes if you’re going significantly slower than the normal traffic flow.

So, when you do get pulled over, know that officers have legal discretion in what they can cite you for. Saying or doing the wrong thing may make things worse. When the officer approaches you and says: “Do you know why I stopped you today?” – take a minute to answer. If you admit guilt or name a specific speed that you were driving, your fate is sealed. Be courteous but vague. However, if it’s very clear you’ve done something wrong, it won’t help being too evasive either.

Do I Buy New or Pre-Owned?

For most car consumers, the first question they ask themselves is: Should I buy new or pre-owned? Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Consider these pros and cons when you’re trying to decide:

Buying New:

  • Just how you like it
For the most part, new cars can be customized to fit your every requirement, from the color, to the drive-train, and any luxury features you desire. And if a dealer doesn’t have the specific vehicle you want, you always have the option of building your own.
  • It’s brand new
Well, this is an obvious one. But the fact that it’s brand new means that you don’t have to worry about any previous accidents or wear and tear that might come with a pre-owned vehicle.
  • Technology
Most every car manufacturer is in a battle to have the most fuel-efficient, safe, and high-tech vehicle out there. So every year, MPG’s are higher, safety ratings are higher, and there are more advanced gadgets.
  • Financing
Banks tend to offer better financing rates on new vehicles because they are generally worth more since they haven’t yet been hit by depreciation.

Buying Pre-Owned

  • Price
A used car is generally going to be less expensive. The relative advantage of the used-car price can also allow a buyer to step up to a nicer model.
  • Depreciation
Cars lose value with each passing month and mile, but the steepest decline happens right away; some models can lose 40 percent or more of their value in the first year. With a used car, there’s no depreciation hit the second you roll off the lot. There’s also less mental depreciation, no need to worry about the first parking-lot ding or rock chip in the paint because chances are the car’s previous owner or owners took care of those for you.
  • Insurance Rates
Like financing, insurance rates will be affected by the age of a car, but in this case the used vehicle tends to be less expensive. A little bit of pre-purchase research will save you from insurance sticker shock, no matter which vehicle you choose.
  • Choice
Although you obviously can’t build a used car to order, maybe you want a model, option package, or even wheel design that’s no longer made. This wider selection can add to the length of the search, but perfection and satisfaction rarely come easily.

Once you’ve made your decision, call your local dealer and schedule a test drive!
