1.Oak Island Lighthouse

To start your trip it’s only right to visit the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. First stop is the Oak Island Lighthouse built-in 1952 replacing the Cape Fear Lighthouse. Made out of concrete long and skinny tower had the brightest light in the United States from 1958-1962, standing on Bald Head Island since 1817. Old Baldy has rightfully earned its right to be the first stop.

2. Cape Lookout Lighthouse

The next lighthouse on our list is on the beautiful Crystal Coast we have Cape Lookout. This lighthouse is on the Outer Banks in the southernmost part and it’s painted for directions with black facing north and south and white east and west. If you’re lucky you might even spot some wild horses!

3. Ocracoke Lighthouse

As simple and remote as the Ocracoke Lighthouse may seem it had been guiding sailors and boats since 1823. The lighthouse stands 75 feet tall, diameter narrows from 25feet at the base to 12 feet at its peak. Being one of the most remote stretches of the Outer Banks, this could be a full-day experience from seeing Ocracoke Lighthouse to exploring the island.

4. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Can’t miss the tallest brick lighthouse in the US and we are lucky to have it right on the North Carolina coast on Hatteras Island. Originally built in 1803 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built as a ‘guiding light’ to help sailors navigate through the graveyard of the Atlantic. There are 269 steps from the group level to the lens of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Always impressive to see the brick lighthouse standing at 210 ft.

5. Bodie Island Lighthouse

The Bodie Island Lighthouse has been replicated three times since 1872, standing 156 feet tall. It is located on the Roanoke Sound, it is located amongst the marshland. The view from the top is incredible and totally worth it.

6. Currituck Beach Lighthouse

Currituck stands out being the only natural-brick lighthouse on the coast with 1 million bricks. Towering over the northern Outer Banks historic Corolla Village making for a beautiful sight at the top with expansive views of the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Currituck is the largest of seven Fresnel lens sizes being known as a first-order lighthouse.

7. Roanoke Lighthouse

We are at our last stop of the trip often one of the most overlooked Outer Banks lighthouses we have Roanoke LIghthouse. Don’t be discouraged by it being tucked away in the quiet east end of Manteo waterfront with small stature and limited visibility, it’s still a lovely sight to see. It jets out 40 yards into the Roanoke Sound with a prim white exterior with black shutters and red shingled roof, capped off by a 2′ ft., 4″ in. the tall lens gives this lighthouse a classic coastal look. Enjoy the fantastic waterfront view and stroll the wooden boardwalk to explore the exterior.
We have completed our North Carolina Lighthouse tour! We hope you had fun and enjoyed our roomy Equinox, be sure to stop back again for another road trip!

What is Canines for Service?

Canines for Service (CFS) is a local organization dedicated to empowering people with disabilities an opportunity to achieve a greater independence as well as enhancing their quality of life and the quality of life for a once homeless furry friend.

CFS was established in December 1996 when CEO/ Founder Rick Hairston moved to Wilmington and he realized there were no service dog organizations in southeastern North Carolina. Hairston gained experience in raising and training service dogs with an internationally known service dog organization in St. Louis Missouri. His 25-plus years of experience in training service dogs helped him understand how a service dog can help give comfort to those with disabilities and their families.

“One of the greatest gifts is serving others,” says Rick Hairston, Founder, President & CEO. “I have committed by life to the service of people with disabilities to meet their needs with the highest quality service dog possible. As a person who uses a service dog myself, I understand the need for these incredible animals and the gift they are to the people we serve.”

Saturday is approaching quickly but there is still time to register. Get your furry friend out of the house to hang out around other pups, make new friends, enjoy a nice run and some fun activities! Your pup needs friends too, so let your pup have the opportunity to rub noses with other pooches and make some new friends during a doggy filled day!

Testing Out a Colorado ZR2 with GearOn™ Accessories

The Perfect Combination for Making the Most of Your Outdoor Adventures

For Summer of Chevy 2018, Jeff Gordon Chevrolet is exploring our coastal city of Wilmington, North Carolina and surrounding areas with a different vehicle every week all summer long! For the first week of Summer of Chevy, we are having fun with the 2018 Colorado ZR2 and just a few of the many available GearOn™ accessories that Chevrolet has to offer.

Water Sports

Our friends over at  Hook, Line, and Paddle happen to know a thing or two about water sports and were happy to help us put Chevy’s GearOn™ accessories to the test. They generously brought over Native’s latest fishing kayak – the Slayer 12 XC (video below) to pack on top of our Colorado. To do that, we equipped the Colorado with Thule® Roof Racks  and the Hull-A-Port Pro™ Folding J Kayak Carrier, allowing us to carry the sizeable fishing kayak securely on one side of the roof. With space to fill on the other side of the roof, we decided on the Thule® Roof-Mounted Big Mouth™ upright bike carrier – making the perfect combination for summer time adventures hitting the trails and waterways with plenty of cargo room to spare for additional gear! For cyclists who need to carry more bikes for family or friends, Chevrolet also offers options to carry over the cargo bed or hitch-mounted carriers that can carry up to 4 bicycles, if needed.

And, for those who enjoy bigger toys during the summer, the Colorado ZR2 has a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds to get your boat or jet skis to the ramp with ease. Not to mention, with the new tow hitch guideline feature available on the new Chevy Trucks, you can get your trailer hooked up in no time.

While shopping Chevy Accessories for our Colorado ZR2, we discovered just how versatile the GearOn™ accessory line really is with its customization options. We were able to showcase its ability to cater to bikers and water sport enthusiasts on this truck, but it also has plenty of options for other outdoor activities. So, if you happen to live closer to the mountains than the coast, GearOn™ has you covered year-round.

Winter Sports

For those who enjoy winter sports, there are plenty of options to secure your gear and equipment separately and securely. With the Flat Top (above) or Hitch-Mounted (right) Ski/Snowboard Carriers by Thule®, you can anchor up to four snowboards or six pairs of skis in the back of the truck without sacrificing any cargo space in the bed.

Camping

PhotoFor those who enjoy camping any time of the year, one of our favorite GearOn™ accessories is this Sportz® Camping Tent by Napier that is designed to fit perfectly into the bed of your Chevy Truck, and can be put up and taken down with ease. Since you’ll have your Chevy Colorado with a 4G LTE WiFi hot spot, there’s nothing stopping you from uploading a peaceful Boomerang of yourself being one with nature to your Instagram story.

Whatever your camping style, Chevrolet offers a wide array of accessories including cargo bed dividers, nets, and roof-mounted cargo carrying options to make sure your camping trip goes just as planned. And you’ll be rest assured that whether you’re driving out on the sand, snow, or up the side of a mountain, the Colorado ZR2 won’t leave you stuck in the mud.

So by now, we’re sure you’re wondering where to get one of these amazing trucks and some handy accessories to go with it. Jeff Gordon’s Chevy dealer in Wilmington has you covered! Come join the JGC Family like the dozens of smiling faces below. Shop for your Colorado or Silverado, pick out your accessories, and have them installed all under one roof.
